Developing the right mindset in sales is so essential to success.
Even with the best product or the most amazing brand, it's challenging to maintain high levels of activity and performance.
In today's volatile and unpredictable environment, you've got to be willing to learn and adapt to new situations, products and customers and be open to feedback.
The habit of continually improving your skills and strategies is vital, and it all starts with improving your mindset.
Now I am not saying it is easy to change your mindset. It takes time and effort, but it is possible.
So, what are some key things we can focus on to develop a growth mindset for sustainable sales performance?
1. Focus on what you can control – it's easy to make excuses for our performance when we aren't doing well. Still, we must take responsibility for our performance and work on the things we can control and influence.
We may not be able to control market conditions, but we can control what we do in those conditions.
We can control our thoughts, actions, and behaviours. We can control much time we spend developing our skills, adapting our strategy and building our competency.
Having an internal locus of focus is the key – It's essential to learn to focus on what you can control and influence. These are the things we can change, and this is where you can have the most impact on your level of performance.
2. Expand your comfort zone – Sales/Business development is not for the faint of heart. You've got to continually expand your comfort zone and be able and willing to adapt to new situations, people and circumstances.
Get in the habit of pushing yourself to try new approaches, participate in industry events and public speaking, reach out to new prospects and try new sales strategies.
Anything that feels uncomfortable is an excellent place to start.
One of the best ways to build a successful career in sales and stay relevant is to adapt and improve your skills continually – this will put you ahead of your competition and keep you sharp.
3. Learn from failure – To do well in sales, you must adopt a growth mindset and learn from failure. Instead of seeing failure as a setback, remember to look at it as an opportunity to learn, grow and improve. Your skills and capabilities aren't fixed. We can all keep improving and getting better. In fact, failing is the quickest way to learn; it's how we learnt to walk. We learn so much more from our failures than our successes, so don't be afraid to fail. Exposing yourself to new experiences, perspectives, and ways of thinking (cultivating a love for learning) is also essential.
Having the right mindset plays a crucial role in determining our level of success in sales.
Focusing on what you can control, expanding your comfort zone and learning from failure will lead to better, more sustainable sales results.
