The WORST kind of Manager

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

Micromanager

Another major reason candidates give for leaving is “I didn't fit the Culture”.

When I dig deeper, they are usually working somewhere where morale and work satisfaction are low, and their manager is the cause. This can go both ways and sometimes it's just that they were a poor fit, but there is a certain type of Manager that destroys positive culture in the workplace.

The Micro-Manager - Now, I’m not talking about a performance management situation. I’m referring to a person with a management style that is toxic.

Imagine every day you feel anxious at work because you can’t make any decisions, you have no autonomy, and you're being constantly monitored at every turn.

That sucks! But unfortunately, many people experience this, and nothing gets done about it.

Micromanagers are all about controlling their staff to an excessive degree. They may be inexperienced or insecure and are often driven by fear related to a loss of control.

They have difficulty trusting others, often demanding frequent updates and overly detailed reports and asking to be cc'd on every email.

The result is low morale, disengagement and higher stress for everyone, leading to high staff turnover and poor productivity.

It is important to identify and address micromanagement issues in the workplace quickly otherwise, you WILL inevitably lose good people.

It happens all the time, and it doesn't need to be this way.

A good manager communicates their expectations clearly, listens to their team's feedback and helps align the team to the organisation's goals.

They model good behaviours and support and encourage their team.

They manage people how they would like to be managed, create a collaborative environment and let people get on with their jobs.

Before you bring on new team members, make sure your culture is free from Micromanagement - it’ll save you headaches and big $$$ in the long run, and your people will be happier and more productive.
